A visit to Kientzheim is a must. Still quite preserved from tourists, it is typical of the Alsatian wine villages. There are four castles, beautiful half-timbered houses, ramparts and of course, vineyards. One of the castles dates from the 16th century and is home to the Confrérie Saint-Étienne, which preserves an underground wine library of 60,000 bottles from 1834 to the present. In one of the castle's outbuildings, visit the Vineyard and Wine Museum. Legend has it that the pinot gris grape variety (formerly called "tokay") was brought to Alsace by Baron Lazare de Schwendi in the 16th century, who was then living in the town.
