The name Kaysersberg means Emperor's Mountain. The birthplace of Doctor Schweitzer, Kaysersberg boasts a red sandstone church, a fortified bridge dating back to 1514, a romantic washhouse, a venerable cobbled main street and picturesque, carefully preserved half-timbered houses. The dungeon of Kaysersberg's imperial castle overlooks the town and can be reached on foot. Protected by its ramparts, this adorable little town has preserved some fine relics of the past, notably the Renaissance town hall and the Sainte-Croix church, which boasts a beautiful Romanesque portal and, inside, a superb 16th-century carved altarpiece.
