It was here that the first engagements of the American Revolution took place. On April 19, 1775, patriot Paul Revere arrived in Lexington after a frantic horseback ride from Boston, to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock, the rebellion leaders partly responsible for the Boston Tea Party, of the arrival of British troops. That morning, some eighty Minutemen waited in Lexington to block the British troops' path. Shots were exchanged and the British troops eventually withdrew. The Battle of Lexington marks the beginning of the American Revolution.
