The town of Salem is a mythical place on the East Coast of the United States. The Salem Witch Trials made this small town famous throughout the United States. In 1692, three young women accused some of the town's citizens of having bewitched them. The affair took on frightening proportions and shook the local inhabitants, Puritans who had settled in the New World only a few decades earlier. It leads to the Salem Witch Trials, which result in the deaths of some twenty people and numerous imprisonments. Far from wishing to forget this sad page in the history of Puritan America, the town of Salem has made it its main attraction. In the narrow streets of the port city, a dozen museums attract tourists from all over the U.S. every year. The best time to visit Salem is undoubtedly Halloween. However, you'll need to book your hotel at least a year in advance! However, this small oceanfront town can be visited all year round. The many museums give you an idea of the historical events that took place here, and the atmosphere of the streets lined with old buildings takes you back to colonial America. Salem is also home to the Peabody Essex Museum, a first-rate art museum. The MBTA commuter train from Boston's North Station takes you to Salem in just 30 minutes.
