Travel Guide Newton

Newton is a town of 3 700 inhabitants 30 miles west of Meridian. Stop at his small station, which was the object on 24 April 1863 of a raid of the Union forces led by General Benjamin H. Grierson. The destruction of the railway station and railway lines contributed to the fall of Rode… and allowed a great American director, John Ford, to turn one of the scenes of the film Les Cavaliers (The Horse Soldiers - 1959), with John Wayne. The station was rebuilt in 1905 and restored in 1992. It is registered on the national register of historic sites. Take advantage of your stop to take a walk from the few Newton buildings with a certain stamp.
