Don't miss a stopover in Newport, which is a perfect blend of chic and cool and attracts nearly a million visitors every year. Small in population (nearly 25,000), Newport is big in history, which will forever mark the history of the United States of America. Like many East Coast cities, Newport was founded in the 17th century by Protestants seeking freedom. In the 18th century, the city was the hub of the triangular trade, ensuring the transfer of black slaves to the New World. Even today, some sites still bear the traces of this dark past. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city became a posh seaside resort where city dwellers, especially New Yorkers, built mansions with ocean views. A visit to the mansions on Bellevue Avenue is a must in Newport. Eleven luxury homes were saved from destruction and can be visited. Others along the cliff still belong to billionaires who made it their summer residence. The port is home to many luxury yachts and schooners. Newport is also home to the Tennis Hall of Fame, with a permanent exhibition that will delight fans of the little yellow ball. Newport continues its tradition as a chic seaside resort and attracts thousands of visitors in the summer, who enjoy the fine restaurants, numerous bars and water activities that the city's unique location offers. Newport is a must in New England. In fact, if you were to visit only one city in the state of Rhode Island, in our opinion, it would have to be it.
