Like neighboring Lexington, Concord is a major site in the history of the American Revolution. On April 19, 1775, after retreating from Lexington, British troops set out for Concord. The skirmish that had pitted them against the American patriots at Lexington turned into a full-blown battle. The colonial forces gain the upper hand, and the British are forced to retreat to Boston. Concord also has a rich literary history. Great writers have lived here, including Louisa May Alcott, who set most of her novel The Four Daughters of Doctor March (1868) here.
