This city of 30,000 inhabitants is especially famous for having seen the first engagements of the American Revolution. On April 19, 1775, patriot Paul Revere arrived in Lexington after a frantic horse race from Boston to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock, the rebel leaders partly responsible for the Boston Tea Party, of the arrival of British troops. That morning, nearly eighty Minutemen waited for the British troops at Lexington to block their path. Shots were exchanged and the British troops, although outnumbered, eventually withdrew. The Battle of Lexington thus marked the beginning of the American Revolution.
