Chalon-sur-Saône, the department's largest city, has a strong river, wine and artistic identity. Well-known to tourists travelling from the north to the Mediterranean coast, Chalon-sur-Saône is an ideal stopover on the way to your vacation destination. A city of art and history, Chalon-sur-Saône was the birthplace of the inventor of photography, Nicéphore Niépce. Chalon-sur-Saône maintains this heritage through its eponymous museum, which features a large collection of images and objects. Visiting Chalon in summer is also an opportunity to enjoy the whirlwind Chalon dans la rue (July 10-13, 2024), an international street arts festival attracting thousands of people.
