Located on the west bank of the Mississippi River near Garyville, this community is part of what is known as the German Coast. The Evergreen Plantation was founded by a German migrant in the 18th century. The plantation, which unfortunately can no longer be visited, is one of the best preserved plantation complexes in the American South and nearly 40 buildings (including the 22 slave cabins) are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Privately owned, it remains an active sugarcane plantation and now serves as a research and education center.
