The city was founded in 1834 by the Frenchman Bernard de Marigny de Mandeville. Under his orders, Louis Bringier drew the plans of the future city. Most of the houses built were reserved for the summer vacations. Only two houses remain from this era and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Moore House "Hightide" at 1717 Lakeshore Drive and Morel Nott House at 2627 Lakeshore Drive. In the late 19th century and until 1936, a ferry ran between Mandeville and New Orleans. In 1956, the Causeway Bridge was opened, which attracted many families to settle north of the lake.
