A town of just over 10,000 inhabitants, located 30 minutes west of New Orleans, it owes its name to Jean Noël Destréhan (1754-1823), former senator of Louisiana and the United States. People come here mainly for its jewel, the Destrehan Plantation, which offers guided tours (two different ones) as well as demonstrations and even lodging (two cottages). It is said that the famous pirate Jean Lafitte hid his treasure there and haunted the house on stormy nights... There is asecond plantation, Ormond Manor, which now serves as a bed & breakfast and a restaurant serving, among other things, Creole specialties.
