Houma is the seat of Terrebonne Parish and takes its name from the Indian tribe of the same name. It is nicknamed "the Venice of America" because several bayous converge on the downtown area. The Americans, who stop at nothing, built 55 bridges to facilitate the life of the inhabitants. The surrounding area is full of bayous, swamps and small rivers, which can be discovered during the famous swamp tours. In town, there are many points of interest, as well as gourmet addresses and nice Bed & Breakfasts where you can spend a well-deserved night. And since you are still in the heart of Cajun country, you will come across many French speaking locals.
