In the early 18th century, settlers from Alsace and Lorraine, among others, came to this area along the east bank of the Mississippi River and soon became known as the German Coast, hence German Lake and German Bayou. Located about 45 minutes from New Orleans and with a population of just over 2,000, this community, like Raceland further south, is a stop on the road to Houma. Des Allemands is known as thecatfish capital of the world. The Louisiana Catfish Festival is held there every year and is entirely dedicated to the cause.
