Well hidden where Bayou Lafourche and the Mississippi meet, the city was founded by an Englishman, William Donaldson, in the early 19th century. It was then designated as the capital of Louisiana between 1829 and 1831. It is now the seat of Ascension Parish and has a population of just under 7,000. Its historic district is worth a visit, with Donaldsonville boasting some of the finest buildings from the antebellum era through the 1930s. Unfortunately, today most of them are in very poor condition... Be sure to visit the River Road African American Museum on site.
