Feteira is derived from the Portuguese word for fern. The name probably refers to the original discovery by the settlers of this area covered with plants. Agricultural land dominates the coastal plain between the neighboring parishes of Angústias and Castelo Branco, while the coast is a rocky area formed by rugged lava rocks and cliffs carved by the Atlantic Ocean. The highest point of the parish is the peak of Cangueiro, at about 706 meters above sea level, under the rim of the crater of Cabeço Gordo. Small streams and impressive rivers flow through the parish at the first rains.
