Cittadella was founded in 1220 when Padua decided to create a new fortified place in the Venetian plain to protect the cities of its county from the covetousness of Treviso and Vicenza. The walled enclosure is one of the few examples of a defense system with a walkway that can be completely walked. After long restoration work, it was opened to the public in June 2013. It is one of the most beautiful defense systems in Europe. Its visit and the views of the region are worth the trip. Because of Cittadella's proximity to Padua, you can easily consider devoting a day or half-day visit to this beautiful city.
