A picturesque medieval town, Marostica is famous for its legendary game of live chess. In 1454, Rinaldo d'Angarano and Veri di Vallonara, two gentlemen, fell in love at the same time with the beautiful Linora, daughter of the lord of Marostica; the latter, in order to avoid a bloody duel, imposed a chess challenge on them. The loser would have consoled himself by marrying the younger sister, Oldrada. This story is celebrated in September every two years (even years) with a chess game in the central square. The "living" game is preceded by a sumptuous procession. Orders are given to the troops in the ancient dialect of the Republic of Venice (www.marosticascacchi.it)!
