Near Asolo, this fortified village, founded in 1199 as the defensive wall of the city of Treviso, owes its name (Frankish Castle) to the fact that at the time of its foundation, the population was encouraged to settle here because the new inhabitants were exempt from taxes. Situated on the axis between Asolo and Padua, the city has occupied a strategic position throughout its history, both in times of war and in times of peace, for its dense commercial activity. It came under the control of Venice in 1339 (until 1797). The most famous figure from Castelfranco is the great Renaissance painter Giorgione (1478-1510), who revolutionised the way of painting in his time.
