The name Treviso derives from the word tarvos ("bull"), but another interpretation links its name to a tribe from Illyria. Renowned for its red chicory (radicchio rosso), the town plays an important economic role, both in Italy and throughout Europe. Treviso (more precisely Ponzano Veneto) is the birthplace of the Benetton company, which has its headquarters here. Benetton is not an isolated case, as Treviso, along with Vicenza, is at the head of the surprising economic phenomenon that has made the Veneto region one of Europe's most important centers of activity. Treviso also boasts an ancient history, as evidenced by its Roman urban layout and medieval and Renaissance architectural treasures.Treviso has retained only a few of its original monuments, all of which have been rebuilt identically. You can also admire some of the lovely brick houses with painted facades that are the pride of Treviso. From an economic point of view, Treviso is now one of the richest cities in Italy! Many companies are setting up here. You don't need a car or any form of transport to visit the center of Treviso, which is best appreciated on foot. The historic center is partly closed to traffic, unless you need to drop off your luggage at the hotel.
