Mestre's ancient monuments are concentrated around Piazza Ferretto. However, compared with Venice, the town is above all modern and an attractive commercial and industrial center. Piazza Ferretto is the center of Mestre. In this square, only a medieval tower, the Torre Civica (1108), stands as a reminder of the ancient city walls, of which the square was once an outlying village. Along with neighboring Marghera (a municipality created ex nihilo in 1920), Mestre represents Venice's production and port hub. The bridge linking Venice to the mainland runs from here. In the evenings, pubs and nightclubs attract young Venetians.
