In 1405, Monselice joined the Serenissima's possessions, losing its character of medieval fortified city to enrich itself with palaces and religious buildings. A fortified hill, the Colle della Rocca, dominates the city. At its feet stands an imposing castle, the Castello Cini, of medieval origin. From the central square, Piazza Mazzini, the Via al Santuario leads to the Via delle Sette Chiese, a votive route punctuated by 6 small chapels that culminates in the 17th century San Giorgio sanctuary. It houses the tombs of the Duodo, a powerful family from Monselice whose most important representative, Francesco, played a decisive role in the battle of Lepanto.
