The gateway to the Po Delta Park, Adria was an important commercial center in the 4th and5th centuries BC. The Greeks named the sea on which they sailed to reach the city "Adriatic". Adria was then home to flourishing Etruscan and Gallic colonies, and finally to the Romans (2nd c. BC). From the 8th to the 12thcentury , Adria was organized as a free commune. Its importance declined with the burial of the Delta and epidemics of malaria. It was saved in the 17th century by Venice, with the reclamation of Porto Viro. Today, due to the gradual drying-up of the land, Adria lies 30 km from the coast.
