Situated in a picturesque location with a pleasant climate, the town has been a settlement since Neolithic times. The town retains its medieval appearance, surrounded by ancient walls and dominated by the thousand-year-old hilltop Rocca (fortress). The streets are characteristic, with Gothic arcades on old buildings and houses with frescoed facades, double- and triple-lobed windows and harmonious balconies. But the town owes most of its charm to its graceful villas: villa Zeno, villa Stark, Palazzo Serena, Palazzo Polo, villa Roth, villa Pasini, villa Rossi, villa Gurekan, Casa Duse, Casa Pasquali, villa Micheli, villa Raselli. The Tourist Office (73, Piazza Garibaldi; +39 0423 529 046; www.visittreviso.it) is open Thursday to Sunday.
