Sheltered from the hustle and bustle and heat of Portoferraio in summer, San Martino was chosen by Napoleon in June 1814 as a rustic summer residence. This villa was thus one of the two residences of Bonaparte during his exile on the Elba. The second, the Palazzina dei Mulini, is located in Portoferraio, 5 km from San Martino. In the middle of a flourishing vegetation, the imperial villa presents itself with a simple architecture, while the Demidoff Gallery stands proudly with its neoclassical architecture. The view of the sea is breathtaking from the top of this valley planted with vines, discovered by the emperor on a horseback ride.
