Emerging from the woods, the village of Waregem, first mentioned in 826, was occupied by the Gallo-Romans and then by the Franks. The town was the object of territorial disputes until the 12th century, before finally falling under the control of the lords of Dendermonde. Life went on peacefully until the French revolutionary period, which precipitated the end of the feudal system and established a new policy. The little town continued to pass the centuries peacefully. However, it was not until1 January 2000 that Waregem was finally recognised as a town in its own right, as was the case for other towns.
