Oudenaarde, a thousand-year-old town along the Scheldt, has written a remarkable history in just a few centuries. Its rich architectural and artistic heritage bears witness to its past. Charles V, passing through the town, fell in love with a weaver's daughter and bore her a child, the famous Marguerite de Parme, who later ruled the Netherlands for his half-brother, Philip of Spain. The city's finest gem is undoubtedly the Town Hall, a superb example of the Brabant Gothic style. The central belfry overlooks the Grote Markt. 20 min by train from Kortrijk, 45 min from Ghent and 55 min from Brussels.
