Lessines owes a lot to stone. The exploitation of the porphyry deposit of the Dender river allowed the creation, between 1850 and 1930, of a new district as important as the historical centre of the town, situated on the left bank. The economic development of Lessines grew further at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Among the main activities of the town were the cultivation and processing of medicinal plants and chicory and the manufacture of chemical matches. The town also had breweries. Today, Lessines is best known for the Our Lady of the Rose Hospital and the international company Baxter.
