The origin of Latem-Saint-Martin dates back to 823-824. But important Gallo-Roman archaeological discoveries were made at the height of the sand bench in the hamlet of Brakel, demonstrating the presence of man at a time prior to that of the Middle Ages. However, the renown of Latem-Saint-Martin will take place thanks to a large colony of painters who settled in Latem and Deurle at the turn of the th and th centuries. Many of them found themselves on the banks of the Lys, where light and colours are so special.
