Mentioned as early as 1176 under the name of Mansus Houzen (group of houses) in an inventory of the goods of the Abbey of Pairis, Houssen was originally an imperial fiefdom of the castle of Pflixbourg. The commune then reverted to the lords of Ribeaupierre until the French Revolution. In addition, a Bronze Age burial site, Roman artefacts and a treasure trove of Gallic coins bear witness to a much older human occupation of the area. Built from 1862, the church of Saint-Maurice regularly hosts concerts as it has a beautiful organ by Martin Rinckenbach with a neo-Romanesque case by Théophile Klem.
