The village of Bischwihr already existed in the Gallic period, as evidenced by the remains of the road dating back to that period that crosses it. In the 12th century, Bischwihr was a dependency of the Bishop of Basel. He collected taxes and owned a lot of land there. The village was Catholic until the 16th century, but the Protestant reform put an end to it before it finally became Catholic again in the 17th century.
