Dongo was famous for its blacksmith's furnaces in the Middle Ages, before the industry declined. From this village, you can enjoy a beautiful, unobstructed view. To the left of the village is the Romanesque church of Santa Maria di Martinico, built in the 11th and 12th centuries and featuring a rare semicircular apse. From here, a path leads up to the Sanctuary of San Gottardo (30 minutes), patron saint of Dongo. The village is also infamous for having been the last Italian Fascist stronghold, since Mussolini was captured here on April 27, 1945, and 15 ministers and warlords were shot on the spot during the operation.
