Grañon has a rich history, and its first traces date back to its castle built in the ninth century on Mount Mirabel, a hill that rises to the northwest of the present-day village. As part of a defensive line made up of five castles in the surrounding area, Grañon played an important role in the protection mechanism against Muslim invaders. The building has now disappeared, as have the two monasteries and hospitals that once welcomed pilgrims. The village, which today has some 300 inhabitants, is now organized around its Calle Mayor, where the shops are concentrated, and preserves a beautiful 16th century church.
