Nestled at the foot of a hill, Nájera is one of the oldest cities in La Rioja. After being under Celtic, Roman and Arab domination, it became part of the kingdom of Navarre at the time of the Christian Reconquest. Residence of the court of Navarre in the 11th century, Nájera became a stopover on the Way of Saint James by order of Sancho III, who wanted the pilgrimage to pass through the city. Nájera reached its peak during the reign of García IV, founder of the monastery of Santa Maria la Real and protector of pilgrims, for whom he built a hostel and a hospital. Today, Nájera is worth a visit for its monastery.
