A small town between Ponta Delgada and Mosteiros, Candelária enjoys a pleasant coastal location, dominated by the volcanic massif. Its watered slopes are ideal for growing crops and flowering gardens. In summer, passing through here is always full of surprises. Legend has it that the little chapel was built by the crew of a ship that had escaped shipwreck on the high seas. On reaching the safe waters of Candelária, the men fired a shot towards the shore and promised to build a hermitage to the Virgin Mary where the bullet had landed. Today's church has been rebuilt on the site of the old hermitage.
