In the eleventh century, Saint-Léger named Saint-Léger-de-Poilley as the lord of the place holding his fief of Olivier de Bellême, lord of the Mesle, son of William II of Bellême, was named Guillaume de Poilley. He founded the first Christianity and built a church dedicated to Saint Léger. The castral mob of the site controlled a passage from the Sarthe downstream of the Medle on the direct path of Bellmen to the Sées. In addition, the Saint-Léger motte, like those of Boitron, Essay and Mesle, supported the progress of the clearing forest. The castle on the motte was certainly destroyed during wars with the English, like the other nearby castles. During the Revolution, Saint-Léger was renamed the Union-sur-Sarthe. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century, Saint-Léger-sur-Sarthe differed in the breeding of Anglo-Norman trotters. The municipality then housed three great haras. You can stay at Presbytère (see accommodation).
