The mountainous massif of Parnes, covered mainly with fir trees from Cephalonia, Aleppo pines and oaks, was classified as a national park in 1961 for the richness of its fauna and flora. In 2007, a fire devastated more than three quarters of its surface area, and the park must now heal its wounds. Replanting the damaged areas is essential if it is ever to regain its original beauty. However, hikers can continue to walk along its paths, some of which are still intact. Some refuges, springs and monasteries, such as the one in Aghia Triada, punctuate the walk. The less courageous will opt for the cable car ascent.
