Athens' former rival is now trying to win back tourists. Its assets? Eretria has become a popular Greek seaside resort. Located 120 km from Athens, it's an exceptional site that's still largely unknown to most foreign tourists (and many Greeks...). While there's nothing remarkable about the town - apart from a few beaches - the treasures of the Eretria Museum and its archaeological site are a must-see. Excavations have revealed three layers of destruction: 490 B.C. by the Persians, 2nd century B.C. by the Romans and 87 B.C. by the wars against Mithridates.
