Welcome to Evia! Just 80 km from the capital, the island is now linked by the proastikos, the new suburban railway, and Chalcis has never been so close. Although the northern part of the island was hit by serious fires in the summer of 2021, and again in 2023, it still welcomes tourists. Built on the west coast, at the narrowest point of the Euripe Strait that separates the island from the mainland, its capital is known for its countryside, springs and beautiful beaches. The buildings of the modern town are built into the hillside above the ruins of the ancient citadel where the fort of Kara Baba stands. Chalcis probably owes its name to the bronze(chalkos) worked by its inhabitants or to the chalki, a shell from which purple was extracted. Chalcis was once a wealthy and powerful city with numerous temples dedicated to Zeus, Apollo and Hera. Today, Chalcis leaves few unforgettable memories for those who have used it as a base for visiting the island of Evia. Nevertheless, the main attraction of Chalcis, whether you're staying here or just passing through, is undeniably the Euripe canal (39 m wide) which separates the island from the mainland: a bridge opens at certain times to let boats pass in the direction of the current. Scientists have yet to explain why these currents, which reach 12 km/h, flow alternately from north to south and south to north. According to tradition, Aristotle drowned trying to solve this mystery..The island is easily accessible by car, train (www.trainose.gr) and bus (www.ktelevias.gr).
