Eleusis, the birthplace of Aeschylus, was during antiquity one of the largest sanctuaries in Greece where the famous "Great Mysteries of Eleusis" were celebrated. Every self-respecting Athenian had to be initiated once in his life to these mysteries, which have kept their secrets. Located at the end of the Iera Odos (Sacred Way) which starts from the Ceramic Cemetery, this site is an interesting half-day excursion, or a stop on the road to Corinth. The modern city is very industrial and offers little of interest, except for a stroll along the harbor. Elusis has been elected European Capital of Culture 2023.Getting there. Take the X63 bus from the Egaleo metro station.
