Edgartown was founded in 1642 by wealthy whaling captains. This explains why Edgartown's elegant, distinguished appearance gives it a much more middle-class feel than Oak Bluffs. The homes of these wealthy captains, built in the Federal or Greek revival style in the mid-19th century, are located on North and South Water Streets. They got rich from whaling, a highly developed industry in Massachusetts at the time. It's like being at the end of the world here, yet luxury is omnipresent in Edgartown, home to the finest hotels and restaurants. The town includes the island of Chappaquiddick.
