New Bedford is one of the oldest fishing ports on the East Coast, long famous for its whaling activities. Its only attraction today is its vast museum dedicated to marine mammals. The very beginning of the adventures of Moby Dick, Herman Melville's novel published in 1851, begins in this port. You're probably familiar with the story: Ishmael, a young sailor, decides to go whale hunting and boards the Pequod from the island of Nantucket. Moby Dick is the name of a great white sperm whale that cost the ship's captain a leg. This novel tells us a great deal about the whaling industry of the time.
