This is where the region commonly referred to by locals as Up-Island begins, encompassing the towns of West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah. West Tisbury has retained some of its rural charm and, unlike the towns in the east (known as Down-Island), it is far from being overrun with shops and restaurants. West Tisbury and the Up-Island region are less easily accessible than the eastern part of Martha's Vineyard. Most bike hire is in Down-Island, if you choose to use this form of transport. This is where you will find Long Point Wildlife Refuge, a protected area with a beautiful sandy beach.
