Peschiera del Garda is one of the most popular places on the lake and its history as a military stronghold dates back to the 6th century. But it was not until the 16th century that Venice built a fortress there. Later, under Austrian rule, the city became one of the crucial points of the Quadrilateral, the military defence system of the occupied Italian regions further east. An ancient garrison town, Peschiera contains the Palazzina storica, the garrison headquarters, built by the Austrians. The city has kept its ramparts, which have surrounded it since the 16th century. The narrow streets are home to shops, restaurants, cafés and, by the lake, water activities.
