A former Roman castrum , Castiglione and its lands were ceded by the Gonzagas to the youngest branch of the family from which Louis, a religious of exemplary life, was born. He was beatified in 1604 and is now the world patron saint of youth. A visit to the Basilica of St. Louis, where the relics of the saint are kept, is a must, as is the Red Cross Museum, which houses a series of amusing period stretchers and ambulances. Finally, in a panoramic position surrounded by a beautiful park, the Duomo also preserves several testimonies of the life of St. Louis Gonzaga, as well as those of the 1859 battles of San Martino and Solferino
