In Roman times, Desenzano was an important lake town. In the 15th century, the Serenissima made it a commercial port. Today, the very active and festive municipality is considered the capital of Lake Garda. It extends over a vast area of beaches, parks, Roman villa, shopping centers, villages (Rivoltella and San Martino della Battagli). In Piazza Duomo, the baroque church of Santa Maria Maddalena houses frescoes by Tiepolo. From Piazza Malvezzi, behind the Old Port, the Via Stretta Castello leads to the castle (11th century) and from the square tower there is a magnificent panoramic view of Desenzano and the entire lake.
