The town of Salò is a beautiful place that has gone down in history. It was here that Mussolini settled, fleeing the Allied advance between 1943 and 1945, to found the short-lived Republic of Salò. The banks of the lake and the Duomo, in Gothic style with beautiful paintings by Moretto, are worth a visit. The place is really charming. It is an elegant town situated on the shores of a splendid creek. It was founded in Roman times under the name of Salodium. Its historical center is a real gem, a dense labyrinth of alleys and small squares crowned by a splendid lakeside.
