The city of Brescia boasts historic monuments of great artistic and cultural importance in an essentially modern urban context. Brescia was the seat of power of the Lombard kingdom, a duchy from 568 to 774, and has preserved important evidence of this golden era, including the monastic complex of Santa Giulia, now a Unesco World Heritage Site. An independent commune in the 12th century, invaded by the Visconti, Dukes of Milan, in the following century, Brescia submitted to the Republic of Venice in 1424. Its history then followed that of Northern Italy. A favorite stopover for wine lovers heading for Franciacorta and Lake Garda, Brescia also attracts vintage car enthusiasts for the famous Mille Miglia motor race. Along with Bergamo, Brescia has been named Italian Capital of Culture for 2023.
