Solferino's reputation is undeniably linked to the famous battle of June 24, 1859, which pitted Austrian troops against Napoleon III's French troops, who came to the aid of the Italians of Savoy fighting for Italian independence and unity. A museum preserves the remains of this historical confrontation. On the same territory there is the Rocca di Solferino, a watchtower built between 1022 and 1611. Called Spia d'Italia (Spy of Italy) thanks to its prominent position on Venetian territory at the time of Austrian domination, it was from here that the French and Italian staffs witnessed the battle of 1859.
