In the distance, the "green hat" bell tower of the church of Dobbiaco can be seen rising above the roofs. Isolated in the hollow of the valley, the village (1,211 meters above sea level) has an exceptional natural environment. Dobbiaco is part of the nature park of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the region of the three mythical peaks of the Dolomites, in the eastern part of South Tyrol. A UNESCO World Heritage Site. The landscape is dominated on one side by white rocks, on the other side by green or snowy plains and meadows and woods.Witnessing the magic of the landscape, the composer Gustav Mahler found in this place, where he had chosen to settle, the necessary inspiration to compose his 9th and 10th symphonies at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, one can still visit the wooden hut where he had settled and the festival The Weeks of Gustav Mahler, from mid-July to mid-August, pays tribute to the musician. The city offers many activities and encounters with nature: a visit to its Parco Fauna to discover the animals of the valley and its two lakes. The one of Dobbiaco is magnificent. Located exactly at the border between two natural parks (Tre Cime, Fanes-Sennes-Braies), it must be regularly maintained because it is necessary to remove the sediments that cause the gradual burial of the basin. The boat rides are very appreciated. The lake of Durrën is reserved for fishermen.
